Taking Over the Firehouse

The historic firehouse was built in 1917. Ever since it shut down in the 70s (the F.D.J.C. is currently at 595 Palisade Avenue) there have been several proposals to redevelop it with a promise to maintain the building’s historical features. In 2018, Jersey Digs reported the city’s zoning board denied a developer’s plan of using the space for a 17-unit development with retail and parking spaces. As of 2019, the real estate listing was removed but previously listed the property for $5.9 million.

Fast-forward – two passionate fitness men of Capital Fitness Ventures LLC finally won the bid for the old firehouse. Martin Kahn and David Jaros saw a need for a more welcoming and community-focused fitness center, thus pouring out their savings and investing their time and energy to make Firehouse Fitness a dream gym.

“We were inspired by the area and the closeness of the community in the Heights, which is something not really seen much anymore, let alone in a big city,” the owners, who happen to be longtime friends, tell The Hoboken Girl.

“The gym options were limited and we felt that the community can benefit from a great fitness center it truly deserves. It’s a tight-knit thriving community with amazing businesses that are growing and has so much to offer for everyone.”

Given the building’s history, the owners no doubt want to make sure they give back to the community and incorporate design elements that include the local community.

The owners added: “We aim to create a supportive and welcoming community, where every member feels like part of our Firehouse Fitness family.”

Details of the Gym

Firehouse Fitness will have top-of-the-line equipment and will be the only fitness center on the East Coast to feature Mayhem Strength equipment, which incorporates the latest cutting-edge technology, HG has learned. They will even have custom-made, one-of-a-kind Mayhem Strength equipment in the ground floor facility (that is ADA compliant).

Martin and David provided more insight: “We will offer a wide selection of cardio equipment from treadmills, Stepmills bikes to ellipticals, and everything in between. We’ll also have personal training, as well as group classes like Zumba, boxing, meditation, and prenatal, just to name a few.”

About the Owners

David Jaros is an entrepreneur who immigrated from Poland 20 years ago and owns many businesses including an HVAC company. He once created a home gym with his friends in Poland when he was a teenager. After moving to the Heights three years ago, he realized there was a shortage of fitness options in the area and that’s where the idea of opening a gym came from.

Meanwhile, Martin Kahn grew up in Fairview, NJ, and started out as a police officer in Bayonne before getting promoted to Chief of Fairview PD. He recently retired in July 2021 and is currently an amateur bodybuilder in the NPC (National Physique Committee).

“I am an avid fitness buff and while a police officer, I lectured college students with aspirations of being police officers about the importance of health and fitness,” Martin shared.

Coming Soon

Firehouse Fitness will be opening in the late spring as it’s currently undergoing renovation and awaiting city permits. Although there is no date set, the owners will be sure to update their followers on their social media.

The owners hope that upon opening feedback will be given so they can ensure the gym members get the most of their workouts and succeed in their fitness journey.

They lastly added: “Firehouse Fitness will strive to be a place where encouragement, community, and passion for a healthy lifestyle really matter.”

The hours of operation will be Monday to Friday 5 AM to 10 PM and Saturday and Sunday 7 AM to 7 PM. Follow Firehouse Fitness on Instagram and Facebook for all the updates.
